“If you have come here to help me, you are wasting your time. But if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.” –Aboriginal activists group, Queensland, 1970s
Our hearts break for the families of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and the countless other black people whose lives have been stolen by the hands of racism. We share the righteous anger of people nationwide, gathered in protest of the systemic oppression that still pervades in America today. We stand in solidarity and join the call for justice.
From unconscious bias, to structures that perpetuate inequality, America has never adequately addressed the legacy of slavery and its enduring trauma. The black community continues to face unjust treatment, from healthcare disparities, to lack of economic opportunities, environmental racism, and a discriminatory criminal justice system all perpetuated by white supremacy.
At Omega, we believe that the well-being of every individual is deeply connected to the well-being of all living things. Until we truly recognize and embody our interdependence, none of us are free from a broken paradigm. As an organization committed to helping people learn to be more openhearted, compassionate and conscious, we must not, and will not, turn away from doing the work to heal and undo harmful patterns within ourselves, our organization, and the systems we are part of.
It will take all of us to affect change and bring an end to institutionalized racism. With people standing together around the world, catalytic momentum is building. It is time that we realize our liberation is bound together so we can truly begin to heal as a nation, and as a human family.
